Dell Mini Broadcom Firmware Missing

Asked by Meyoria

I installed Unbuntu 10.10 on a Dell 9 Mini with a Broadcom wan
I can't connect wirelessly. It shows ,Device not ready (firmware missing). I've tried several steps according to other posts.
I keep getting errors every time I try any of these. I have the firmware disc but I am unable to figure out where to put the driver when it tries to run. The ndisgtk command gives an error as well. I've tried running it from the file and command.

I was give a chance to update but it fails everytime. At first the password entered wouldn't work. Not it works but the uopdates still errors.

Try plugging the computer in to the router with an Ethernet cable.

Mine worked that way - once connected with the cable I ran an update. Then the required drivers for the wireless were available and downloaded and then I could connect via wireless.

Hi,

You need to install the following Broadcom driver package using apt-get or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source

This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)

For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-source:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove ndisgtk ndiswrapper-common firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutter

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Then REBOOT and retest wireless using Network Manager.

Keep in mind that aptitude is NOT installed by default in Ubuntu 10.10. That is why you have to use apt-get instead of aptitude.

Regards,

Mark
