Well, reinstalling Windows XP isn't easy without the CD... Besides, this is the Ubuntu help forum, you know. :)

I don't know what you've tried before to get the wireless card working, but I'd suggest you reinstall Ubuntu and try Ndiswrapper around the Windows driver in Ubuntu. In your situation, trying Linux another time seem to be the logical choice.

Here's more information about Ndiswrapper: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/

Good luck!

Did you try Ndiswrapper as I suggested, and if so, did it work?

If you are experiencing other problems, please make a new topic for each. You should also try to be concise and to the point, and make sure the information you provide is useful for us when helping you. Since this is a help forum for Ubuntu, you can't expect to get help for installing Windows, but if you want help for your Linux installation please just ask away. :)

well, i tryed and will try agin, but its way to confuzing....
Im ok with the; goto system->Administration->Software sorces and Terminal thing.... (to install the driver for the link sys)

Ubuntu does not have errors any more unless i try to do that "Desktop Effects" thing..
I did read the READ ME and the INSTRUCTIONS, but it wal all to confuzing...

Im thinking of going to a diffrent web site to see if they have a better way or better intructions...
Do you know any web sites?

(Will it matter if i told you if i had a COMPAQ Presario v2402US?)

Try searching System->Administration->Synaptic package Manager for "ndiswrapper". I get four hits, among them a graphical setup tool. This version of Ndiswrapper may not be the latest one, but it can help you get started anyway and may be sufficient to solve your problem.

Desktop effects doesn't work for everybody (me included). It is still somewhat experiemental. You may need to upgrade your graphic card driver to a newer one to get this working, but no guarantees. As far as I can see, your PC has a ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200M IGP graphic card. Here are Linux drivers for ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeonhd.html -- but you may wait a few days for it to be released for Ubuntu/Debian.

I don't know your PC model first hand experience, but you may find some more useful info here:

Can you start the graphical setup tool for Ndiswrapper? Either from an icon in the menus somewhere or from the command line?

I don't use Ndiswrapper myself, so I don't have it installed on my PC. But the general idea is that you use the native Windows driver that came with your wireless network card.

Here's Ndiswrapper's help forum, install section:

Of course you can go out and buy Windows. But as I said, you can't expect help for Windows here. Please respect this and go elsewhere for help with buying and installing Windows. Thank you for your understanding.

For compatibility with Microsoft Office just change install OpenOffice using
System menu - Administration - Synaptic
in the search tool in there search for
OpenOffice.org-write

Open OpenOffice from the Applications menu and race through the 'first start up' questions
Tools menu - Options (in linux the preferences are usually in the Edit menu instead but not in this case)
    In the pop-up box expand
Load/Save and select
General
near the bottom see the drop down / rollerble options?
Text Document - change the drop down beside it to Microsoft Word 97/2000/Xp
use the drop down to change it to
Spreadsheet - Microsoft Excel 97/2000/Xp
Presentation - Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/Xp
watch out with this one because instead of being the one immediately before the current default
it's the one that's 2 backwards up the list
Done? Now, back to the left pane and the expanded menus - choose
VBA Properties
    Tick'em all :)
Microsoft Office (unbelievable how compatible OpenOffice can be made)
    Tick'em all :)

Job's done. Now every time you make a new document it will automatically save in the dodgy .doc and .xls formats that Windows Users know and love rather than in the safer odt format that Windows shuns.

Ooops

In that first sentence i wrote
For compatibility with Microsoft Office just change install OpenOffice using
but meant
For compatibility with Microsoft Office just install OpenOffice using

lol, sorry about that

I hope your getting more used to Linux now and having fun with it. It can be frustrating at first but once you start to get used to it the rewards are worth the initial struggle. How long did it take you to get used to Windows? How long have you tried Linux for so far? My bet is that you'll understand Linux better in a few weeks than you understand Windows in all the years you've been using it.

Good luck and have fun - that's the main thing

Oh and welcome to linux :)
