Home folder request failure when clicked

Asked by Jan Sander

When clicking on "home" (using Gnome) I am presented with a blank screen. I.e. no icons and window refuses to close except by repeated clicking on "X" in top right of screen.

The underlying files exist and can be accessed from the "open" comand from various applications. Also the system works OK when entered as another user. I do not know how it started.

A second minor problem which might not be related: When I start computer and log in with name and password the desktop background colour does not reset as I have come to expect. I have set it to a plain green. But as soon as I call up: System > Preferences > Desktop Background the colour changes without me doing any selecting at all. No real problem but if it is related to first issue it might be diagnostic.

Any ideas greatfully received.

Permissions in your user's home folder may have been corrupted. Can you reproduce any of these issues in a freshly created user's session?

Thanks, but it does not solve it.

It does not appear to be a problem with permissions. All files in my home directory, "jan" have at least "RW" permission set for owner when listed - "ls -al" - in a terminal. Also I can readily access files from other applications "Open" command. I did set up another user account, transferred some files to it and it works fine.

The problem is only when I try to open open the file browser direct from the "Home folder" icon, e.g. in the "Places" menu. What I get is a screen with title "jan - File Browser", etc including a notification of 56 items, and free space. But the space where file & directory icons should be is a white blank and when it does not respond to the mouse cursor or instructions. I have to use "force quit" to exit the kill the screen or move to a different workspace.

1) Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
2) Have you performed any upgrades or done any installations from third party repositories or with third party scripts / programs?
3) Could you please post the output of the command "apt-cache policy nautilus"?

1) I am using Ubuntu 7.04 on a AMD 64 bit computer.
2) Not that I can remember; certainly none very recently
3) I got the following listing:
jan@desktop:~$ apt-cache policy nautilus
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.18.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.18.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.18.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
jan@desktop:~$

Hope this is what you need.

Try reinstalling Nautilus with "sudo apt-get remove --purge nautilus && sudo apt-get install nautilus".

Thank you Murat Güneş. I did the reinstall of Nautilus as you suggested but it did not work. The problem persists.

The system is fine for other users when logged in. Nautilus works for their user directories but not mine: "jan". I can access my directory, "jan", from a standard terminal and also from programmes such as the OOo word processor or Inkscape using the "Open" (Ctrl-O) command. There appears to be something failing in the specific link from Nautius to my, "jan", top-level directory. I can also access my directory when logged in as a different user (subject to access permission constraints of course). It is very puzzling.

I have now installed Konqueror to access my Home folder. That worked OK and also reset the system somehow such that also Nautilus works. I am not clear that there is sa connection but it now all works.
Many thanks.
