The title bar has disappeared on all applications

Asked by Teddy

I am not able to minimize/maximize/close any window. Also, the computer will not allow me to download compiz or metacity. So, all the suggestions for me to type in 'metacity --replace' or 'compiz --replace' have fallen short of solving my problems. I just want my title bar back and for all my windows not to be flush with the computer screen.

Try
System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual effects and choose None.

When I go to the main drop-down menu and select 'System', I don't see 'Preferences' as a choice. Is there perhaps someway to make those same choices through a Terminal? And if not, I still need an answer. Thank you for trying.

press alt and f2 at the same time will bring up a window type in gconf-editor , click run then look for apps click it in the drop down list matacity click it ,then look for general button __ layout
/apps/metacity/general
button_layout

In case double or right click to edit:
close,minimize,maximize:menu # left hand side
menu:minimize,maximize,close # right hand side

Thanks, but I'm still stuck in a rut. I typed in Alt-F2 and the run screen came up. I typed in gconf-editor and a terminal popped up but it wouldn't let me type into it. I tried to run gconf-editor in a terminal without having used Alt-F2 and still nothing. I'm beginning to think I have a virus on the computer. I kinda wish there was a system restore function for Ubuntu. If I could go back 2 weeks, I'd be fine. Nothing lost if I do.

Would it be in my best interests to just take it to a person who specializes in Ubuntu computer repairs?

(Btw, I'm running version 4.4.2. It's old but it was working before.)

to find a repair shop that would work on a linux machine around here, they just say no... that should have worked . if you have an install cd boot it to repair mod and run throw the options .

I'm running 4.4.2 It's not originally my computer. My brother gave it to me and I was using it as a learning opportunity. But now it's killing my motivation to keep learning Ubuntu and code. If I could just find a way to get my title bar back, I would be better off.

4.4.2 could be a version of kde desktop or a very old version of
ubuntu . ubuntu has changed a lot . i am running version 10.10 64 bit =
2010 october 4.4.2 = 2004 april figure out what size processor and how
much ram is in the pc and we will see what we can do to upgrade to a
newer version

By upgrade, do you mean I would have to go out and purchase another version of the same OS? Or is there someway to find an upgrade online?

OK, I checked out how much ram I have left on this computer. IT says that I have 877220. Now, once I download the upgrade to Ubuntu, will it automatically remove the one I have now or will I have to do that manually?

So, one last thought: once I install the upgrade of Ubuntu, will it, in effect, erase everything I have accumulated on this version?

And if that's the case, should I back up all my files before I put the upgrade on my computer?
