I need to know how to download the files. The instructions say to
download the files as binary, not auto-start or text files.

When downloading files from an Ubuntu mirror, be sure to download the files in binary mode, not text or automatic mode. I'm not sure how to do this. Any help?.

When you download the files from an Ubuntu mirror, they are automatically downloaded as "binary".

You would have the issue of downloading in "ascii" (opposite of "binary") if you are using Windows XP and you are trying with the command prompt "ftp" program.

I am using a laptop pc with Windows XP SP2 and IE. When I go to a mirror
site for PowerPC
{http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/installer-powerpc/cu
rrent//images/powerpc/cdrom/} (I want to use my Mac PowerBook G4 to run
Ubuntu Linux),and click on the file initrd.gz it auto downloads and I
can save it where I want. When I click on the vmlinux file it opens note
pad and tries to create a txt file then locks up. What am I doing
wrong?.

What you need to download is the "ISO" image for PowerPC.

See "Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD" at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/7.04/release/

The exact URL then is
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/7.04/release/ubuntu-7.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

The file is about 700MB. If you have a download manager installed, you can use it. Otherwise, if you have a fast Net connection, the download should finish in about an hour.

Finally, you would need to "burn" this ISO image to a CDROM disk, then boot from it.
To "burn" to CDROM, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Hope this helps.
