The panel is gone I can right click on desktop and get applications but there is no administration or places or start or quit anymore. I can't even find how to reboot now.

No change.  It said no such file or directory.  I really appreciate you trying to help me.  I lost the panel a couple of days ago when I went to update manager and said yes to install updates, it rebooted after updates and panel was gone.

ok, let's try it together; pls enter the commands as follows, in order shown below

press Alt-F2 on your keyboard and type the command

gnome-terminal

press Run - the terminal window opens; enter - copy/paste - the commands below ; after each one press enter

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel

rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

pkill gnome-panel

that is all - you should see the panel. recap of above - there are 4 commands AND 2 actions Alt-F2 and Run. tell me pls how it went.

Katherine, pls copy/paste the commands - that removes any possibility of errors in typing them; pls notice the white spaces, the 2 dashes before recursive, the ~ /. (tilde slash dot before gconf) etc; linux requires utmost care and precision among others in entering and carrying out commands - the command line interface - CLI - is a v v sharp tool.

I copied and pasted each command and hit enter after one. In terminal it just had a flashing cursor in the next line, like it was waiting for another command. Still no panel.

it is something that normally works with no problems; in your case for sure there is a problem somewhere else that developed during the upgrade procedure you mentioned.

question, do you have any personal data files on this upgraded to 10 install ? that you care about ?

if yes than back them up to other media - usb stcks, CD/DVD's , external HD etc. and do a new 10.04 install on a fresh formatted partition. if not then just do a fresh 10.04 install.

just a hint, learned a long time ago the hard way, I NEVER upgrade from prev releases, ALWAYS do fresh installs. the upgrade procedures quite frequently/more often than not yield unpredictable results; this is valid with any os. not just ubuntu. in a fresh install if something goes wrong it is much easier to pin point what and where it went wrong while in upgrades, well, that is quite a task not easily accomplished.

I have over 1000 photos of my grand children on my pc.  How can I do  a system restore (take my computer back to the way it was the day I bought it) on a linux/ubuntu system.  I know what to do on windows based systems, just at a total loss with Linux.  I got this computer about 4 years ago and haven't been able to do a lot of things I could do with windows.  I did the upgrade hoping to finally be able to do more, now all I can do is check email and that is very distressing.  I have learned how to do a few things here and there over the last four years, but being this limited is very detrimental.  I can't afford a new PC, like I said, i have grandchildren (6 of them) and Christmas is coming quick.  Please```` If you can help me get my PC back to store bought state, at this point I would be very grateful.  After the holidays I will get a windows based system and be rid of this head ache.  All I was trying to do was save money, but it has been a
 oyal headache from the beginning.  Please help me.  My screen saver was photos of grandchildren and it was a joy to watch.  Now no screen saver at all, can't download to MP player for company at work, can't do much of anything but email and surf and I am not a surfer.  Please help me get PC to store bought state so I can get through the holidays, then I will find a way to get a computer that is windows based and deal with the viruses just so I can do a few fundamental things again.  I tried to download 10 LTS and that won't even work.  I just want to be able to do a few basics and that is impossible at this point.

yes, I fully understand; pls do not despair, the things are not as bad as you think they are. the pictures/data are still there somewhere, the only think is to find them. normally they are stored in your /home folder that may have some subfolders such as /Pictures , /Documents etc.

so, let's approach the task of saving/backing them up on some other media in a methodical way. I'll try to use a graphical interface which is quite similar with win instead of CLI

first, pls make sure that you have handy usb stick/s that we'll use as back up media; they are pretty inexpensive and are of all kind of sizes; if you say that you have some 1000 pictures and say each is 1- 2MB (a v rough approx) then maybe a 2GB usb stick is more than sufficient. that will set you back maybe $10 tops

second, connect the usb stick to one of the usb ports on your pc (just plug it in); in a v short while on the desktop you'll see an icon telling you that the system detected this media and mounted it.

third, press ALT-F2 and enter

gksu nautilus

and press Run; after you entered your password nautilus window in root mode opens; on the left panel left click on File System; on the right panel double click on home icon then on your name folder and so on - you got the idea - until you find the pictures mentioned.

I do not want to go any further now until I hear from you whether you found or not the pictures; then we'll continue and copy them to the usb stick . that is an easy part - v similar with win if you say that you're familiar with it.

just a word of caution, while in nautilus pls be v careful - pls do not carry out any commands now, just browse gently through folders until you found your pictures.

regardless of what it is, if you say that the CD you're having is since pc bought, I'd recommend, for a fresh install, a more recent release - lucid 10.04 LTS - a stable rel that is supported for 3 yrs.

so, there are 2 ways of getting a new release CD - 1. request/buy a new CD from ubuntu or its distributors ; see this url

comments re above, it appears that getting o free CD takes quite a bit of time; so, maybe, if you live in an area that has ubuntu partners that sell lucid 386 CD's it would be much faster to just buy one - I believe that it will a v modest price. otherwise just download the xxxxxxxx.iso file and create the install usb or CD in a win pc or a ubuntu pc as described. because the contents of one of your posts impressed me deeply, I am quite willing to create myself a lucid 386 CD for you and mail it to you immediately if you desire. for that pls send me an e-mail to my personal e-mail address ; you'll find it if you press on my name on the page that opens.

I am sending this from my phone. I downloaded 10 @ start up says panel encountered problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet" delete don't delete. Same with OAFIID:Gnome_FastUserSwitchApplet" then freezes up when I try to do internet or anything else.

it is mandatory that I HAVE AN ANSWER to this, why ? because of the messages you posted 7 hrs ago. this type of messages were present on old releases (7.xx or 8.XX) .where there was a bug present. there is a fix for this BUT GOOD ONLY if you still have present on the pc THE ORIGINAL ubuntu release which apparently IS NOT the case since you said that YOU UPGRADED. in other words the original installation is apparently broken/compromised by the upgrade procedure you mentioned.

yes, it appears that what you upgraded to is 10.04 lucid release and in the process something went amiss.

press ALT-F2 and in the window opened type

gnome-terminal

sudo apt-get purge gnome-applets
sudo apt-get install gnome-applets

pls copy/paste the output of ALL commands above.

With the first command. It said reading state information. Done 0 upgraded 0 installed 0 reinstalled. Second command, cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running. 3rd said the following packages will be removed: gnome-applets* gnome-applets-dbg*gnome-dbg*ubuntu-desktops*0 upgrade 0 new installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation 1,896kB disk space will be freed. I said yes and it removed. I did the last command and it was installing. It froze up while it processing triggers for man-db ... I am going to put download on usb stick at work today. I really appreciate everything you are doing.

I rebooted and did the last command again and it completed the applet install. It still freezes up when I try to get on internet. I will put the linux 10 download on my usb at work today. Thanks again

ok, that's good. when the ubuntu INSTALL MEDIA (in your case the usb stick) ready make sure that the pc where the broken ubuntu is installed has in the bios the FIRST boot device the usb port. then just plug in the pc the ubuntu inst media stick and power up the pc. follow the instructions mentioned in a previous post above.

ps. I hope you md5sum the xxxxxx.iso file BEFORE you created the usb stick.

I can not offer any clearer directions than this. I hope you understand.

 The other day I clicked on the link and spent an hour or so trying to do what it said on the page you told me to go to and check the MD5sum but I can't figure out what directory to put. Everything I put in was wrong because I couldn't get anywhere, so yesterday at work I downloaded the install from the link you told me go to. What do I put for the directory when doing the MD5sum on the first link. I am trying to follow your instructions. I really do have trouble with the com-mands, etc with Linux. I'm stuck on the part of checking. I downloaded the download which was the next step, I was just trying to do the next step I was able to do.

When I first downloaded 10 it was on my home pc (ubuntu) the second download on the usb stick was on a windows pc. I did both downloads from the same link you sent me to. So I should be able to find on home pc (the one that is messed up) with the md5sum right? But I am doing something wrong because that command isn't finding on pc or stick.

Do you live in the united states? Would it be possible to do this over the phone? I could call you so you wouldn't incur any charges if that is okay with you? If not I understand, just trying to think of a way that would be easier to understand. I'm really getting discouraged. Family and friends have me fix their computers all the time. I'm just really having a hard time understanding Linux. I should have left pc alone I just hated being so limited on what I could do on Linux. I bought it thinking I could just get on internet and be happy with that. Cost was hundreds less and that was fine for a couple years then I got brave and tried the upgrade. And here I am freezing up and able to do more and rely on phone now.
