Ubuntu 10.10 loads to blank screen

Asked by Kung_lou

Just ran a new install of Ubunto 10.10, default install.

Completes install successfully but upon requested reboot loads to a black screen with flashing cursor in top left hand cornor.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is a Asus GS2 Laptop So hardware requirements should not be an issue

Works fine just running it straight off the CD - without installing it

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

If you have trouble with intel8xxx graphic cards:

please try this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

If you are not getting a grub boot screen before the black screen, try holding down the shift key right after the vendor splash screen to force grub to display. The default if only one kernel/OS is found is to skip the grub screen. Then take a look at the actual grub commands. Type "e" without the quotes to see the grub commands, and edit them.
Not sure what problems you would have installing from a cd, but the usb installs get the drive numbering messed up. Typical edits change hd1 to hd0, and sdb to sda.(or hd2 to hd1 and sdc to sdb). At the first successful boot, run:
sudo update-grub to fix all the drive numbering.
Good Luck
