Cannot connect to the internet after installation (professional please)

Asked by dgd1988

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my Dell Inspiron 2200. When I began the installation it said that it could not install the broadcom x43 and other wireless internet drivers. I tried the thread that deals with that and installed the ndiswrapper, but received errors installing that too. I restart the computer to see if anything happened and I still can't connect to the internet. Please help me. When I installed Ubuntu a month ago: I was able to connect to the internet from the live portion. Now I don't know what happened. I guess it decided to skip the network drivers. I need to get my wireless on this laptop as soon as possible. I prefer to be helped by a Ubuntu professional. If you are an amateur: don't attempt to help me. In other words, don't waste my time. Thank you.

You will find mostly "amateurs" here. If you want professionnal support, check on Ubuntu.com, there should be a list of supporting companies for Ubuntu.

OK...not a Ubuntu professional but own three dell machines all inspirons 1100 b130 and 9300 .. I suspect if you reboot and push crtl and f11 at the same time, the system has norton ghost in it. Your computer will be back to the day you got from the factory .. remember to save any work or photos or music or important things to an external drive or cds or dvd's or whatever and then it will take you back to the first day you had your system..that is if you haven't reformatted your computer nor the image is corrupt..

Thats the easiest way to do it.. and then reinstall Ubuntu.. second way to do it is.. well.. take your xp disk that came with your system .push f12 on boot giving you a temp boot selection boot to the cd rom dvd drive and then reinstall windows. If it asked you to repartition or delete partitions say no.If it asked you if you want to keep the old windows operating system say no.. then proceed with installing xp..then take the disk that came with your system called device drivers..this is after windows installs and put it in the cd rom.It will install and when finished it will come up and tell you what computer you have. Then click on my system or drivers. The drivers are checked marked that are on your system and then click extract with each one and install. Its advisable to install the chipset first, reboot come back to windows and then go back to programs dell accessories and then select dell cd ..then open again select video driver and install and reboot and then do the same as before come back to the programs and dell accessories and then dell cd.. then install the sound drivers and then look at the wireless drivers and Ethernet lan and so on.You do not have to reboot until these are all installed. It will ask you if you want to restart, you dont have to until all are installed. Each one will say extract at the bottom and then you hit extract and install .When you finish your display and then all your wireless and your lans and modem and bluetooth etc should be installed.

At this point install any other software you are using and then put your data ,photos and such back on your computer. You are formatted reinstalled windows os..Now.. if you want to properly install Ubuntu.. Check to see what you can do about the driver in question. Actually you can log on dell.com and chat live with a tech support there for free .. They will more than likely know the answer to your question they also have forums there too. They are quite useful, but I can almost assure you that a dell tech is using Ubuntu or has someone near by that is. Also I heard Dell is starting to install Ubuntu on their systems in the near future..Anyway I hope that I helped . I worked for Dell for almost 10 years computer hardware specialist. I used linux redhat then and was kind of forced over to the windows world because of lack of drivers or having to dual boot. That was a serious mistake. I gave over to windows but now im back and loving it.Take care it will be fine .. Just use the above to help or chat with someone at dell.com online or maybe post in the forum there.By the way be sure to have your service tag number or express service code handy if you do chat there or if you sign up for their forum.Take care MichaeL

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 via Wubi on a Compaq 2500 laptop and I cannot connect to the Internet ( wireless ). I am by no means a techie, so I need some information, put as simple as possible. Also, when I shut down Ubuntu and come back, everything that I have installed ( or any changes ) is no longer there. I read somewhere that all I needed to do was to install a Wifi driver which is bcmwl5.inf, how can I do that.

Can you help with this problem?
