I can't update update manager in synaptic package manager

Asked by rs217000

First off, I'm extremely new to Ubuntu and all things Linux. Sombody gave me an Ubuntu 5.10 cd the other day, and I'd like to upgrade to the latest version (7.04 I believe). I looked up directions online, which initially seemed to be pretty straightforward, however, I'm stuck pretty early on at the part where I'm suppose to update 'update manager' to the latest version (0.42 and I'm currently at 0.37).

My problem is that in Synaptic Package Manager, my 'update manager' 'mark as update' box is totally greyed out, as well as every other package on the list. I'm sure that there's some bonehead mistake I'm making as a Linux noob, but I'd really like to get the update rolling.

If anyone has a work-around like a manual override command line or something, I'd be much appreciative. Again, I'm a Linux virgin, so dumb it down for me.

Thanks a lot.

Hello there rs217000,

Welcome to the "real world". Just so you know, you can download the latest, very stable version of Ubuntu Fiesty 7.04. It is free to download. You burn the image to a cd or dvd and then you have your very own. There is alot of support here for Fiesty. I just had a question answered today and I couldn't be happier with Ubuntu. My advice: for a fresher start, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and check it out. Hope this gets you started.

Hey allmightypc,

Thanks for answering so quickly. I downloaded the iso yesterday to burn it, and unfortunately my burner is acting up, so until I remedy that issue, I need to find a workaround for the upgrade. If you have any insight to that, that would be great. If not, it's really no sweat...I can burn it somewhere else.

While I was waiting for an answer, I found the package out on this site. I think that I may just try to manually install the package. Is there anything I should take into precaution before doing so?

Thanks again for your help.

No, you can just try, if it cannot install, you should not break anyting.
An upgrade from 5.10 to 7.04 could be quite difficult though, there are 3 versions between the two.
Personnally I would backup the data, format and install from a CD, if that's not too much work to reinstall and reconfigure the softwares.

Can you help with this problem?
