AGV AnitiVirus Problem

Asked by gerath32003

I just installed AVG Antivirus on my computer i saw the post on Linux.com In witch I read daily it scanned about 7000 objects but came back with 4 Errors and objects that it could not check, and yes i only scan form my user account on down. I check the permissions on all the Object the folders all have Read access to them. The reason i had installed the AVG is i have use it as a Antivirus program in the pass but for windows and found it was fairly good. The other reason is everyone keeps telling me online and Chat's and so on not to worry with Virus in Linux or Ubuntu but somethings really wired things had been hapening with my ubuntu. For one it has slowed down some what a lot campard to when i first installed it. I also have duo Boot with Windows XP in witch i sometimes view or use the files in the windows OS from with in Linux Ubuntu. Due the fact i can't seem to get or understand how Vmware works. The other stuff that is happening is window black out almost every day now when i view another web page or just about anything i do with anything. Please If Anyone know anything about this suject please help.

and no I am not Paranoid just that wired things have cause be to wounder if i have gotten a Virus or something .

I don't have an answer for your question per se, but a suggestion. Uninstall AVG and don't worry about viruses. I've used Ubuntu for 2 years now and have never ever used any anti-malware programs. I surf the web all the time and have even come across a lot of viruses but none will run in Linux. I have no annoying popups or any other signs of spyware. In short, getting a virus in LInux is just really, really unlikely. You would almost have to install it on purpose for a virus to get in and do anything. OSX users also don't worry about this (kind of makes you wonder why MS can't make a secure OS).

Your slow down is almost certainly something other than a virus and dual booting with windows will have no effect on viruses either (it would be somewhat possible to move an infected file to windows but I don't enable write support for NTFS drives as I have no need to). If you do, I'd just scan from windows when you need to.

If you really want to scan your computer, try clam av. It's a standard Linux AV. Scan your computer and then uninstall it. Like all AV programs it's a resource hog.

Anyway, my 2 cents.
