pluging earphones but no change

Asked by Vic

Hi there, I'm new to Linux so forgive me if this sounds... easy.

I tried to plug earphones to my laptop so I could listen to music without disturbing people nearby; but when I do, nothing happens... music is still playing from the laptop's speakers.

Thanks in advance.

Try to open a terminal going in : Applications->Accessories->Terminal.

Then in the terminal type:

alsamixer then type enter.

Navigate through the Options using the arrows and press M on the Headphone option.
Press esc to exit.

Thanks for your answer Sachetto.

When I type alsamixer and hit Enter I get this on my screen:

AlsaMixer v1.0.13 (Press Escape to quit)
Card: HDA ATI SB
Chip: Generic 11c1 Si3054
View: [Playback] Capture All
Item: Master [db gain=-32.00, -32.00]

50<>50 100<>100
<Master> PCM Caller I Off-hook

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I don't really understand. Could you please tell me what to do?

Thanks a lot.

Don't you have this screen?? (see the attached image).

I have a item called headphone, I just press M this option to activate the headphone.

Hi Sachetto, thanks again.

No, my screen only has the options I already described above.

How do I get my headphones to appear there?

Thanks

Are you using ubuntu or kubuntu?

If you're using ubuntu try to run gnome-volume-control and configure your headphone.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 for 64 bits

When I open the volume control I see only two options:

Master and PCM.

What do I do?

Try to open gnome-volume-control than go to edit->preferences and see if you can enable your headphone.

In Gutsy (new version of Ubuntu, October) there is better support for HD audio, with more options in the audio properties dialog box.

In your case you have the ATI HD Audio hardware. I am not sure what is the level of support there.
You mention you can see "Caller ID" and "Off-Hook" which prompts be to believe that the sound card is not detected. These sounds like modem devices.

Do
         cat /proc/asound/cards

for info regarding the detected sound cards.

Ok, so I suppose I'll have to wait until that time.

Thanks Simos Xenitellis
