Xubuntu Update Manager Issue

Asked by David Todd

Hi, hope someone can help, have looked around the web and posted a question in Ububtu forum but no answers. I am a relative newcomer to Linux so this might sound silly.
I have Xubuntu 9.10 installed and working fine on an old Thinkpad 600E laptop, I went into update manager and it is saying that Ubuntu 10.04 (not saying Xubuntu) is available for download. I realise I should update to 10.04 before 10.10 but I am a newcomer to Linux so not sure if this would just download the Xubuntu version or Ubuntu which I don't want - I installed Xubuntu because it runs better on older machines.
On the Xubuntu webpages the screenshot for updating just says 'New Distribution Release Available' so I don't want to risk downloading a version which might cause problems.
Thanks.

XUbuntu is actually not as lean as it thinks although it is slightly better for older systems. XUbuntu is EXACTLY the same as Ubuntu except the default apps, desktop and window manager are different. The underlying OS and subsytems are exactly the same. The update manager will look through your packages to find one ending in '-desktop' (In your case xubuntu-desktop) and upgrade based on that. You will be fine

If you have Ubuntu and want XUbuntu you have 2 choices:

1. Install xubuntu-desktop
Most people will tell you this but the fact is you ALREADY have most of te functionality which will then be duplicated by this, Ubuntu already has OpenOffice, by installing xubuntu-desktop you will also pull in abiword and gnumeric which are not necessary. This will happen with ALL the apps that are different between the 2 releases (mousepad will also be pulled in but you already have gedit etc)

2. Install xfce2
By installing xfce2 you will get ONLY the lightweight desktop but NOT all the other packages in the xubuntu-desktop. This not only requires less packages to come down but also uses less disk space due to zero duplicated packages

If you want a truly lightweight environment then LXDE and Fluxbox are excellent choices too

Thanks for the quick replies to all who answered, that's a brilliant response.
Knowing I can get help like this gives me the confidence to make the move from Windows to Linux on my PC, now I just have to decide which distro and take the plunge. Thanks again.
