Ubuntu can read the OSX filesystem. Not write I think, but at least read. I tested yesterday with a USB harddrive on Maverick :)

Thanks Francois thats great to know thats half my battle over :), but what i also need to know is can unbutu do data recovery for lost files on this HDD the drive has not been touched or written to since the incident, but i have really important files that need off there for my work and i am wondering if Unbuntu can solve my problem as funds for a data recovery software are sparse at the min.

Many thanks

Mark :)

If the partition is readable, it will mount it in read only mode, and you can copy anything it can read.

But of course, if the partition is damaged, you may need recovery softwares to be able to read what is in the partition.

It depends what happened to your harddrive. What do you think is the problem? Hardware? Software?

It was some software i used to help me manage my files, that somehow removed files that i did not intend to be deleated. im not sure if it was user error or software error but i am pretty sure i only asked the said software to delate one folder and it ripped everything including every folder and subfolder out of my HDD, placed it in my trash and started deleting files by the time i realised the critical files where gone. i have tried a recovery program on my mac and it found said files but wont recover in the demo and i have to pay $99 which is fair but i am a student with no real funds and this work is my final year project, my Dissertation, and various other current assigment and its imperitive i get this work back as i have been working on this for just over a year now. is there any freeware data recovery programs for unbuntu that are any good for this? i take it unbuntu does not have a inbuilt one? i know thats probably a silly Question but i am clutching at straws here and have only really glanced on previous version of linux such as red hat in the past.

Thank you so much for your help thus far, if you can answer this question you will be a complete life savour :)

You can install recovery tools in Ubuntu. But maybe it's better to use a dedicated system for recovery. You can try "Ultimate boot CD" for instance. But those tools can be a bit technical to use, you'd better make sure you don't do anything wrong. Maybe ask some help.
