Booting error during the boot

Asked by struek21

hi!
I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 via the text loader. I used this because my computer will not load the Live CD. During the Live CD boot, i get all the way to the screen that lists the boot sequence. It loads fine till it reaches the Hardware configuration step. From there a long list presents itself and freezes. The list contains some error messages.

When i gave up on the live cd, i tried the alternate text loader, which worked fine till i tried to boot from the hard disk that i loaded it to. A boot screen appears with a selection of available options to boot from. I select ubuntu. It progresses a while and then freezes just a few seconds into the boot. I left it sit for nearly four hours and there was absolutely no progress.

My system is a Compaq presario Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz
1 GB of RAM
1 SATA hdd (windows)
1 IDE hdd (ubuntu)
cd-rom
dvd/cdwriter combo
nvidia GeForce 5200

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

Did you try the recovery mode from the menu? It should give you a command line prompt at the end. Is it the case?

the same error happens when i try to boot through recovery mode. It freezes up at the same point and no access to a command line. The only command line that i can access is the grub command line at startup.

Ouch, a bit too complicated for me.... Is it the only error message you have? If that's the case, I guess we need to find someone with higher technical skills unfortunately

That's weird... Probably a bug with the newest kernels, but usually that's the opposite.
Could you give me the reference of your computer?

Try running the memory test (at the bottom of the boot menu). Maybe one of the 256MB chips are defect somewhere high up in the mem range. Older Linux distros typically use less memory, so maybe they can run unaffected.

The memory test takes a long time to finish, but be patient and let it run. :)

ok...so i found out why it was freezing during the boot. I have an onboard graphics card and a peripheral nvidia geforce 5200. It boots properly on my onboard graphics card, but freezes when i try to use the nvidia card, which puzzles me because i heard that linux runs better with nvidia. Oh well, at least i can run it now. thanks for all your help!

ps...i tried downloading the nvidia drivers for linux, but when i try to boot through the nvidia card, it still freezes and now i can't get to the graphical interface at all...even if i run through the on-board card. I can still run the CLI, but will not load the graphical interface. It only did this when i enabled the nvidia card...is there a way to disable the device through the CLI? Sorry about the rookie question, i'm new to linux.

Look at this thread - it's a similar problem to yours: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/13633

The difference is that In that thread, he was able to boot with the onborad VGA.

I suggest you try to restore the old xorg.conf from the CLI:

$ sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf~ /etc/X11/xorg.conf

And reboot.
