Can you change RAM speed within Ubuntu?

Asked by Jenni Ward

As it says on the tin. I can't do it from within the BIOS, I don't have the option. It's 800MHz RAM but it's only running at 533 (I checked using lshw).

Is there a way of doing this within Ubuntu?

(Running 10.10 Netbook remix)

Is ALL the ram 800Mhz? If one stick is 533Mhz then it will make the 800Mhz run at 533Mhz too.

It's only one (SODIMM) stick and it's definitely 800MHz.

Is your BIOS up to date?

Yes, latest version that's on the Samsung website anyway.

I'm on a Sumsung N140 if it makes any difference.#

Just taken off the back panel to double check and it is PC6400.

According to:
http://www.reghardware.com/2010/01/06/review_netbook_samsung_n140/print.html

It ships with 533Mhz

Also:

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?ReviewID=3203484

States:
Look more carefully again and you'll see that the Samsung N140 takes 800MHz DDR2 RAM, where the NC10 uses 533MHz-rated memory. We don't think this will make a jot of difference, mind, since the Atom's front-side bus is limited to 533MHz already

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36331
Shows it has an FSB of 533Mhz too

So the ONLY way you will get 800Mhz RAM to be fully used is to push the CPU FSB to 800Mhz and make the CPU run at 2.4Ghz and most probably MASSIVELY overheat. I recommend you do NOT do this at all.
