Ubuntu 10.10 Constant running of File Manager upon start up

Asked by Steve M

Upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4 to 10.10 on 2nd PC about 6 hours ago. Installation appears fine and all programs seem to work normally, however File Manager appears to be looping, even after reboots. Bottom tool bar generates a constant stream of icons stating "Starting File Manager". Need to know how to stop this process which has been going on for several hours. Once stopped I believe everything will be fine with the install.

Note: This is on a different PC from my previous post.

Make sure you uncheck the "save applications" in the startup items app in the second tab:

This can help.

Looked in Startup and under the Options tab the "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" check box was already unchecked. Interesting to note that when I also unchecked the Bluetooth Applet (don't need it on this computer) and closed out the Startup window, the File Manager startups stopped. I think this worked. I'll consider this question "answered". Thanks for your help.

Interesting that I am now seeing the same problem on my 1st PC (see ticket 131791) which may be the root cause of the small and immovable windows upon application start up. I have the constant scrolling in the bottom toolbar of "Starting File Manager". As directed before I went to Startup to assure that the box under "Options" was unchecked. I tried to disable some unneeded apps which should have forced a save of the settings, however the scrolling still appears. I believe this is utilizing all my CPU therefore Ubuntu cannot generate a full screen display (although right now I am typing this note through Firefox in a small, immovable window).

After looking through other posts and posted bugs I found a reference to bug 325973 (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/325973) which references the problem with Nautilus which appears to be identical to the problem I am seeing with 10.10. a copy of the fix is shown below however this was for an older version of Ubuntu (Jaunty). Need to know the equivalent steps to fix this under 10.10.

Bug description

When "show_desktop" is disabled from gconf-editor (apps -> nautilus -> preferences, uncheck "show_desktop"), windows saying "Starting File Manager" replicate until the computer fails to respond. In the System Monitor, the nautilus process keeps opening and closing (presumably crashes and restarts).

If show_desktop is unchecked, running nautilus in terminal yields the following error message. If show_desktop is checked, nautilus opens and no error messages are displayed.

$ nautilus

(nautilus:1307): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
$

I think is it worthwhile to note that when I open my flashdrive, this problem does not happen.

This problem occurs with the latest Jaunty updates, specifically nautilus(-data) version 1:2.25.91-0ubuntu1, and originated with nautilus(-data) version 1:2.25.4-0ubuntu1. This problem does not occur with nautilus(-data) version 1:2.25.3-0ubuntu2.

Diff from 1:2.25.3-0ubuntu2 to 1:2.25.4-0ubuntu1: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21900685/nautilus_1%3A2.25.3-0ubuntu2_1%3A2.25.4-0ubuntu1.diff.gz

My Ubuntu 10.10 installation has 2 accounts associated to it, one for me and one for my wife. When I sign in under my name the "Starting File Manager" replication begins, however when signing on under my wifes account, the problem does not appear. I also have a 2nd PC which only has one account associated to it, and that is for me, and when signing in to my 2nd PC the "Starting File Manager" replication begins on that PC too. Both my account and my wife's were set up the same, so I am puzzled as to what may be the reason for this problem only to occur under my ID.

I appreciate anyone's thoughts as to what may be the root cause of this problem. As the replication continues it gradually brings my PC to a halt, where I need to do a cold boot to recover.

Found root cause of problem. To stop constant running of "Starting File Manager" just disable Ubuntu One from the Startup. Reboot after making change and Ubuntu 101.10 runs normally.
