Microsoft keyboard crashes ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Guus

I'm using a Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard 1.0A on Maverick Meerkat. When I use the special keys (like zoom key or volume buttons) the gnome menu seems to freeze. Everything becomes unusable except for commands like ctrl+w or ctrl+alt+delete so everytime i use the volume i have to restart my pc. This was not the case in Lucid. In the keyboardconfig i have set the model to Microsoft wireless multimedia keyboard 1.0a and it doesn't work either on this or the default.

If it crashes can you restart the x server to get the OS back?

You don't need one, just press ALT+K+PrintScreen

The oS may seem to have hung but you MAY find its just the X server which has crashed. In Linux the X server is separate to the OS so can be restarted in this way. Windows doesn't have this feature so a full reboot is necessary.

Can you help with this problem?
