9.10 shuts off completely and needs re-install when I attempt to hibernate

Sound you've reproduced it lot of times.
Why not then file a bug since hibernation issues aren't trivial to debug.
Maybe test mainline kernel if it works then.
When reinstalling anyway why not test 10.04 or 10.10.
