How can I switch between two input methods?

Asked by Andrei Kouznetsov

I can easily switch input methods almost in all windows simply by clicking on the area with right button and selecting "Input method"->"Russian".
Can I assign a hotkey for that? (I haven't installed any additional software for this, it works since default installation of Ubuntu Feisty)

Yes - you likely even already have a hotkey, it's just not one you would stumble across accidentally. See System > Preferences > SCIM Input Method Setup.

No matter what set in hotkeys of "System > Preferences > SCIM Input Method Setup", nothing happens when I strike the hotkey. For example I've tried Control-k right now.

When you say you right-click to select Russian, does it really say "Russian" or is it "Cyrillic (Transliterated)"?

You can enable Russian through the Keyboard Indicator applet (right-click on the top panel, Add applet, etc).
If you have Flash, here is a walk-through,

Yes, it says "Cyrillic (Transliterated)"

I don't have a Russian keyboard, so I can't type using a regular Russian key set. So, I don't need (and can't use) Russian layout. That's why I use transliteration and I like it. The only thing is to get a hotkey for it.

I see what you mean. I do not know the solution for this.
I think I have seen this working for Amharic which is essentially the same.
You can post a bug report on launchpad.net or you can join the list at
http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gtk-i18n-list
and ask this specific question. That list is the developer list of GTK+, which produces Cyrillic Transliterated, etc.

I hope this helps.
