ubuntu installed but vista starts on booting

Asked by vivek

I had installed ubuntu feisty fawn in my laptop which already had vista home premium installed in it. Initially everything was fine, when i used to start my computer, option used to come whether i wished to start ubuntu or vista. However, recently i had to reinstall vista as some malicious virus had attacked my computer and was eating up all my memory.
Since then, the option to choose the o/s at the time of booting has stopped coming and vista starts automatically. I have checked the disk management and have found that the drive where i installed ubuntu is intact as before. What should i do ?

By the sound of things, Windows has overwritten the Master Boot Record on your HD.
You'll probably need to reinstall GRUB (the Ubuntu bootloader that gives you the menu at startup), but I'm not sure the best way to about doing this...

I'll have a look for you, and see what I can find :)

Yes, windows does not know how to play nice with other operating systems. It just overwrites the master boot record and ignores the other operating system(s). All you need to do is reinstall GRUB to the MBR, There are steps to do that here:

It says it's for error 17 but is just a reinstall of GRUB so should work for you too.
