Changing from 32 bit 10.04 to 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 without losing data and settings!

Asked by Dr. Duane Elihu Xavier

In the past when upgrading Ubuntu I have LOST my Data and Settings!
I want to Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit from Ubuntu 10.04 32 Bit
HOW can I do this so I do NOT lose My Data and Settings!
there should be a OPTION when upgrading to keep my current configuration instead of overwriting everything with a NEW Upgrade and starting from scratch again!
Please send me a way to do this TO:
<email address hidden>
OR
WHERE to find HOW to!
Thanks
Duane

Why do you not have a backup!? You won't lose anything then. If you r drive motor fails randomly then where is your data? You will then have to pay THOSANDS of dollars in professionaly (and non-garunteed) data retrieval, or you can spend a couple of HUNDRED on a USB drive to backup to.

There are places where configs are offered and you have to make a choice, files like /etc/sysctl.conf and /etc/default/grub are 2 such files I can think of off the top of my head.

To change from 32bit to 64bit you MUST reinstall, you cannot do it any other way.

Can you help with this problem?
