Why did you fix something that wasn't broken when you have some form of deadline!!!?? It make no sense at all......

I suggest you check your RAM for errors.

You will need to provide more info. Try answering some of these quetsions

* Are there any errors?
* Do you hear the PC speaker beeping?
* Do the power lights, keyboard lights blink, or behave unusually?
* Does this happen more frequently if you move your PC?
* Is it a hot day where you are?
* What kind of computer is it, how old is it?
* When did you last remove the dust from it?

There are a myriad of problems that would fit your problem description:

* Power cable not connected fully
* Memory corruption
* CPU over-heating (motherboards usually are programmed to shut the computer down in this case)
* Corrupt storage device causing software corruption during readout.
* Wierd and whacky driver error.

i don't know if there are any errors. how do i check?
no beeping
power light acts fine, no keyboard lights.
its a laptop and i havent moved it for the past couple of days from the table and it shutdown 3 times randomly today and 3 or 4 past few days.
fine day and well air conditions inside the house.
acer aspire 4730z, atleast 2 years old, 3gb ram, pentium dual core T3400 at 2.16 ghz, 250 gb HD, just update the bios today to the latest one.
its been awhile since i cleaned it. i starting using ubuntu daily about 3 months ago and with a couple of updates it was pretty stable, until the maverick update.
i tried power without the battery it shutdown and i tried it with battery with power supply and it still shut down...
i've been using it fine till i updated and it works for a few hours then shuts, so i dont think its memory
heating is a problem i started with on discovering ubuntu, i do notice every thing laggy with 10.10, but my cpu stays under 50% most times.
nothing is connected to it
could be driver error.
let me know if anything else is needed and if possible a way to downgrade to lucid for the time being, thanks

To get Lucid back you will need to format Maverick and install Lucid, you cannot roll back. You have also already breached your deadline so you may as well chill out.

The fact it is dying in memtest also implys bad hardware to me, or a bad power supply

"just update the bios today to the latest one"

Just a thought, it could be the BIOS upgrade... if you upgraded after you started having problems then probably not. I would reboot and get into your BIOS and look for the temperature settings to make sure your notebook isn't overheating.

If you're working away in Maverick and it suddenly shuts down it also could be a hard drive problem. I've seen a number of systems with corrupted hard drives that have done stuff like this (usually they cause the BIOS to hang for a long time too). The best way to check a hard drive is by using the manufacturer's tool (e.g. Maxtor's tool for maxtor). Often they have ISO images of the tools available.

Hope this helps a bit... it could be Maverick, but random rebooting is usually either a driver glitch or a hardware problem.

i updated the bios after the restarting problem.
yes my dead line is over, i just gave up all my work yesterday.
anyhow, i dont see how it could be a hardware problem if it worked fine with maverick on day one but started acting up day two of the upgrade.
i will hopefully remember to check the temp. settings because it just might be overheating.
