Wireless Support

Asked by tasslhoff76

Christian Robottom Reis, the moderator for the launchpad-users mailing list suggest that I post something I posted elsewhere over here. So I will. This is not a request for tech support, though. It's a question for a feature that I believe Ubuntu needs to implement before it will ever truly have a chance of being main stream. Here it is.

I saw an article in Cnet news announcing the launch of the new ubuntu version next year and it said that Ubuntu Developer Jono Bacon, invited interested people to submit feature requests for the release at its Launchpad site.

Well, I linked over there and setup and account and everything but did not find any way to make a suggestion. It seems that my suggestion is listed there, sort of, as a blue print named "New-Improved Kinder-Gentler Wireless Client Interface Widget". However, it's really difficult for me to tell if this is planned to be implemented in your next release or not.

The bottom line with Ubuntu is that I really really like it and would ditch Windows for it, and would even pay for it but I cannot get wireless to work for me. I went online. I scoured forums. I found lists talking about my router and my wireless card and I followed multiple instructions and nothing. It's just too darn hard. I know that Ubuntu is raw and the prompt is "awesome" and all, but I'm so used to GUIs now that prompts confuse me.

I just want an easy way to plug in a wireless card and have it work. You can even tell me which card to go buy that will work out of the box and I'll do it. However, your current lists of which cards work out of the box is not accurate. There just needs to be a better way and I would be more than willing to pay a couple or few hundred dollars for it.

Easy wireless implementation is a complete must.

Hello tasslhoff76,

Have you ever tried ndiswrapper with your windows driver to use your card ? It gives some results where anything else gives nothing. Just install ndiswrapper-gtk package and launch the app with the same name, and follow instructions. If you need some help, ask it here, we will help you as most as possible.

For your comment about Ubuntu feature, please add a comment in blueprint or if no reply, mail mdz (Matt Zimmerman) about it : https://launchpad.net/~mdz.

Hope that it helps you.
