mplayer fatal error

When I try to play a DVD using mplayer I get a fatal error "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device."
I have installed codecs libdvdcss2 and win32

Do you get any more output? This probably has very little to do with your video codecs, more your selected display driver. Try selecting some different video drivers and see what happens.

If you open an instance of mplayer, then right click on it and select preferences, there should be a video tab, from that, you should have a list of video drivers.

Thanks making progress, one last question how would I determine the best one to use, trial and error?

Sorry, yeah =/ thats really the best system I have. If you want to give me your exact hardware specs and kernel/drivers/xorg versions, I can look one up for you, but even then, I would want to test it to be sure /me shrugs
