Should be, but depends of too many parameters. But that should be more or less the same procedure.
And please don't forget that with Ubuntu 7.10, all this should be managed by a new graphical interface with hot plug functionality and bullet proof X.

Of course if you are already using the Nvidia utility or so, that's not really a revolution. Otherwise, that should definitely help.

The only difference could be how you specify the monitors in the monitor layout.
For example, for Xinerama and the i810 driver, you have these options,

i810 Driver:
CRT -- Cathode Ray Tube
LFP -- Local Flat Panel
DFP -- Digital Flat Panel
TV
CRT2
LFP2
DFP2
TV2
NONE -- Not connected

For a laptop, you use LFP (laptop's display) and CRT (external VGA, EVEN IF it is a LCD TFT display).
For desktop you may have to use CRT1 and CRT2 (or LFP and CRT as with laptop). Please try these variations and report back.

For instructions, see

From those, Xinerama appears to be the easiest,
