Cannot find or run the base session script

Asked by danweb

Upon login I get the following dialogue box;
“Cannot find or run the base session script. Running the GNOME failsafe instead”
Which is followed by;
“This is the failsafe GNOME session. You will be logged into the ‘default’ session of GNOME without startup scripts being run. This should only be used to fix problems in your installation."

Steps that lead me to where I am now;

1. Updated to Gutsy Gibbon (no errors or problems encountered)
2. Added the WiFi radar through Synaptics
3. Went into the session configuration and set it to remember applicaitions from the session, so that it would start them up next time.
4. Rebooted to test and could not get a login, would freeze before the login screen.
5. Booted into recovery, logged in as root and renamed the etc/X11/XSession to XSession.old
6. Moved xsession.d folder to the trash can.
7. Ubuntu would then boot up with the following dialogue box;
“Cannot find or run the base session script. Running the GNOME failsafe instead”
Which is then followed by;
“This is the failsafe GNOME session. You will be logged into the ‘default’ session of GNOME without startup scripts being run. This should only be used to fix problems in your installation.
8.I then restored the Xsession.d folder and renamed the XSession.old back to Xsession. But I cannot get rid of the errors at step 7?

Any help would be great, I am quite enjoying Ubuntu, but this one is starting to get me down, I have been on Google for hours and tried all sorts, but to no avail....

fixed it myself - in a fashion!

I had forgotten that I had changed my /etc/gdm/Xsession to Xsession.old whilst trying to sort things out.

So I put it back, but I do still have some problems...

No login/logout sounds, and the boot into Ubuntu seems a little slow,

Although these might be Gutsy issues and not related to my session startup problems
