start terminal app, session logs out

Asked by bronxbuoy

I installed Xubuntu 7.0.4 on an old Dell Latitude laptop (cpiR 400GT), PII, 400MHz, 256MB, 40GB HDD dual boot with Windows. There were no problems during the installation and the few things I've tried, e.g. office apps, config apps work except whenever I use Application->Accessories->Terminal the machine automatically logs out and takes me to the login window. I had run various Redhats on this machine without problems but this is my first *buntu installation. Any ideas?

I had a similiar installation where this occures with me, it turned out to be that there was a lack of virtual memory i.e. your swap isin't turned on. In term do a sudo fdisk -l , is there a swap partition? Also free -m in term....check this blog on the topic, there is a how-to near the bottom, but other tutorials exist out there on turning swap on in ubuntu http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/10/07/memory-swap-management/

OOps I umped the gun on that, only realised after the post, disregard the top post .....this is a known bug with terminal and xubuntu http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3130. I had to install gnome-terminal as a workaround, but after a while I changed to fluxbox and terminal works fine from there, so I stuck to flux instaed of xfce.
