Can't connect to internet using my verizon wireless broadband

I have installed Ubuntou 9.1 on a partition on my Toshiba laptop. I am trying to connect to the internet using my verizon wireless card. Unbuntu, I think is seeing the wireless card as a USB device. It shows the VZaccesss software on the card and when I click on it it shows the files. Got any clues?

ok Beverly, v interesting the output of sudo lshw -short command; I tried it on my pc and it works v well but ... I'm using 10.04 and 10.10 latest ubuntu releases; probably on 9.10 that you're using (just noticed it now) this cmd is not supported. in order to level the playing field and for many other reasons (I won't get into that now) I'm strongly suggesting to upgrade or, even better, do a fresh install of 10.04 lucid release (pls consider a fresh install - it is v safe and devoid of any surprises that an upgrade brings about).

for sure you're using a 3G usb modem identified as

106c:3b05 Curitel Communications, Inc.

this is in addition to the other two web interfaces

yes, you're right, ....'I think is seeing the wireless card as a USB device.'.... ; there is good news though, it appears that your 3G modem can be used successfully on 10.04 lucid with a little 'help', I mean just a couple of additional files that need to be created and a couple of additional packages to be installed.

so, pls get 10.04 ubuntu release installed, it is an LTS release (supported for 36 mo) ; 9.10 in six mo is not supported any longer. just tell me when you have 10.04 functioning on your laptop; pls do not close this ticket/question; we'll continue then (let you know what the additional steps needed are).tu.

- a fixed modem/router usually supplied by your ISP ; this modem/router allows you to connect over the phone line to his network. moreover, it usually has also a wireless (wifi) interface that, if present, allows you to connect to the web wireless ; your pc already has built in the interfaces required as mentioned above ie

- for a wired connection, a so called 'patch cable' or 'ethernet cable' or 'pc to router cable' , it has 2 RJ45 connectors (one on each end) ; it has 4 pairs; just walk on any computer store and ask for it; it'll set you back $5-10 tops. if the store is asking additional questions show them a copy of the description. NOTE: if your modem/router HAS wifi capabilities the cable mentioned is not needed - the pc-modem/router connection will be wireless.

do you have already a modem/router installed at your place ? if yes then let's try and get you connected to the web either by means of the wired or wireless interfaces.

then just connect one end to your laptop RJ45 ethernet connector and the other to one of your router RJ45 connectors. boot your pc and look on the upper panel right hand side close to the sound icon for the wired connection applet and left click on it. let me know what you see. we'll continue after that. tu.

The only access I have is my aircard. I am headed out of town on business for the next two and one half weeks. I'll be staying with two sets of friends for two legs of my trip and they both have wireless. I'll try to download it through their systems. I want to install it on my other laptop which I can carry for only part of the way... so we'll see if we can get it set up .... otherwise - how much space would it take on my windows pc? It told me it would take two days to download on my air card!

And yes - that is the Verizon card I use... and want to use.

yes, the aircard (usb) is quite slow; a 10.04 lucid CD download is approx 600MB ; the time required to get to downloaded depends on

1- the access point connection to the web (that is a wired connection) - this is the determining factor
2- as well as the wireless connection speed between your pc and the access point.

for your info - 1. can be anywhere from .1MB/sec up to hundreds of MB/sec (if connected to a LAN); over phone line to your ISP network it's usually anywhere from .1MB/sec up to 15-25MB/sec ( for example I have a a connection to my ISP of 16MB/sec) so I can download the 600MB/16MB/sec in approx 4 minutes depending on the quality of connection.

so you need an absolute minimum say 700-800MB free space on the hard disk to store the ....iso file. the space required for installation is, to be on the safe side, a minimum 5GB - this is just the os no applications or data storage.

I am going to download v. 10 and install it it on another laptop. When I get it set up, I will try the air card - if I can't get it work, I'll open another problem. Thanks so much for your help!
