Sounds bad. It seems that the system cannot mount the partitions because one of the files on your system is corrupted.

Here is what I would do:
-use a liveCD, boot on it, and check the hard drive for errors. Maybe there is a physical problem on your hard disk, so it's important to make sure if it's reliable or not
-if the disk is fine, then I would use a LiveCD with the same version as your current system to copy/paste the missing file on your harddisk. Then try to reboot. Maybe it could fix the problem if this file is the only corrupted one of course ! However, if it's not the only one, you could try to repeat the process.
-if it's too complicated with many corrupted file or a failing hard disk, you can use the LiveCD to backup your documents and then reinstall the system.

You can find the packages online I think, but you still have to extract the file from it.

Maybe it's not worth the trouble: if your computer is recent enough (let's say 4 to 5 years old), you can install the new version, it's out since this Sunday... Go to Ubuntu.com, it offers the download on the homepage.

Your problem seems serious, you should use another computer to download the CD and burn it if you can. Anybody can help you ?

To burn the CD with the installer, you need a computer with a working system :) So you need a Windows XP, Mac OSX, Ubuntu, whatever, but working fine, with internet access :) Then you download the ISO image, and use a burning software to burn the CD (or copy on a USB stick, that's also possible).

You need to do that to have a CD or USB stick to reinstall the system. I really think it's the easiest solution. It could be very complicated to fix your current one, there is no such option as "resert to factory settings", especially when y ou cannot even boot the system :) So the CD is the answer, burn it on another computer, then use it to do a clean install, that should work much better.

Also, remember that when you start with the liveCD, you can check if the harddrive has a problem. I think you should do it, because if your hard drive has a problem, you need to know it and replace it. The disk testing software is in "System>administration".

Can you help with this problem?
