The silence is scary. After working fine for a month suddenly "4.246769 uvcvideo: Failed to Query (129) UVC probe control" error

Asked by pjb7669@msn.com

Now 2 VAIO's displaying same symptoms. Boot time on SZ 5minute, Boot time on CR 1 minute (from 30 sec) and growing?

The link to the 2007 bug report does not offer a solution!

OS Ubuntu 10.04 LTE 64bit installed on a VAIO SZ890.
1. Worked fine for a month then last night after I pressed power instead of the normal 25 second boot up I relieved a UVC error message. I did not realise that if I left it for 3 minutes it would boot into the desktop.
2. Reinstalled 10.04 LTE 64bit. Same issue.
3. Upgraded to 10.10 Release Candidate. Same issue
4. After googling until I am cross eyed the closest thing I can find is a reference from 2008 about a generic ricoh camera. I'm guessing that UVC is short for (Universal Video Camera) below is the complete error

[ 4.246769] uvcvideo; Failed to query (129) UVC probe control : -32 (exp. 26)
[ 4.246831] uvcvideo: Failed to initialize the device (-5).

Ubuntu 10.10 [Name of laptop was here]

5. After 3 minutes this line of text appeared in addition to the above
[Name of Laptop was here] login: ( 126.4825641) tpm_tis 00:09:tpm_transmit: tpm_send: error -62

6. PC boots to desktop

Very irritating as it worked fine. FYI the VAIO motion eye camera has never worked when I tried to use it with Skype or other applications. While the PC works it's irritating to have to wait almost 5 minutes for the PC to boot.

Seems like a common issue alright, seeing it on my Vaio as well. Why is the bug marked as "answered" if there is no solution here?

I tried the following,

1. I disabled TPM in the BIOS. After receiving a warning that security software would not be able to run properly. I went ahead and did it. Upon reboot it asked me to confirm the change of TPM state. I did so and saved then rebooted. No luck. Still having the same issue. I reset to TPM enabled.

2. Looking at the boot priority in the BIOS I noticed that the internal hard drive was way down the list. I moved it up further hoping this would solve the problem. It did not work.

Still looking for a solution. I'll keep an eye open. thanks.

I just imaged a VAIO CR520 with 10.10 64Bit. When it boots it quickly flashes what appears to be the same message. Instead of a 5 minute wait it's only about 20 additional seconds to the normal boot time but I must admit I find this disturbing. Ubuntu 10.04 did not do this on this machine before but like the SZ apparently developed this error "after" installation.

I know you guys are busy with the launch but could this be a symptom of a larger problem? I now have a VAIO SZ791N and a VAIO CR520 both running 10.10 64 bit and both look to be developing the same problem. I can no longer use the SZ as waiting 5 minutes to boot is unacceptable for me, Windows XP boots faster now. I'll continue using the CR but if it also develops a longer boot delay I'm afraid I'm going to have to reset to Windows 7 or (gasp!!) Vista.

I hope someone can help me figure this out.

thanks

PJB

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Would be much appreciated. I would settle for being able go back to an older version of Ubuntu but whatever is causing this has gacked that option for me.

Trick or Treat Ubuntu community? Peace.
