removing unnecessary icons from gnome desktop

Asked by marcus aurelius

how would i remove stranded icons from the gnome menus?

i installed the most up-to-date version of open office. however, i never use the math or the draw packages, so uninstalled them via synaptic. however, the icons to launch these packages remain on the gnome desktop menus.
