Use ctrl+alt+left click to rotate cube. More than that I don't know. I am n00b too.

My understanding is that beryl is more or less gone now. It remerged with compiz and the new one is called compiz-fusion. If you enabled "desktop effects" you got generic compiz. As for installing compiz-fusion there is a nice how to here

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=481615

It's what I used and I had no issues.

Ubuntu Feisty has all the options one would get with Compiz/Beryl, though there is no graphical manager to enable/disable.
You can view using gconf-editor, then check /apps/compiz/

If the cube is not rotating, you may have not enabled the option for cube in System/Preferences/Desktop effects. In this case, you press Ctrl-Alt-<left/right arrow> to move to other virtual desktops.

For the record, the "desktop effects" that are part of feisty IS compiz. It is the "more stable" and also more limited version of compiz that existed prior to the merger of compiz and beryl (now named compiz-fusion). I haven't paid much attention to this lately so I don't know if it will ship with the generic compiz or the jazzed up compiz-fusion.

For Feisty, in gconf-editor, you need to change the value of the key

/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize

from 1 to 4 in order to get the cube rotating.
