Cross migration between releases

Asked by EricDHH

Hello

i have a thinkpad with ubuntu-desktop 10.04 and want to change it to 10.10 netbook release. I can remove an install lots of packages to do this but the release itself stays unchanged. What must be changed to let the installation appear as "unr" "xubuntu" "ubuntu"? So the update-manager can update to the right version further?

Do you simply want to change of window manager, or from distro ? It is possible to install KDE inside Ubuntu. In this case changing of window manager and of distro are independent tasks. If you want to change to a new distro, you will have to do a fresh install. In this later case, I can help you to keep you data and configuration.

Have a standard ubuntu-desktop 10.04 on my thinkpad, for future i want to use netbook release unity 10.10 on it. So i hoped the version can be trickled before update-manager do his job. Full fresh install is the last option, not pretty nice cause many packages have to be corrected by hand. Just did this on my netbook, took several hours to get it working with my favorites and luks home.

Can you help with this problem?
