No Gnome startup sound

Asked by Amapele

I have been trying to get the Line In jack on my Gateway 550GR to work. I am running Lucid Lynx and recently tried to add an options statement to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf using the procedure described by http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1043568. I could not get the pulseaudio daemon to start afterwards, so I removed the new statement. I still could not restart the daemon. After several reboots, everything appears fairly normal except that the African theme at Gnome startup no longer plays. I checked all the volume and mute levels in alsamixer. All my sound preferences are the same.

This feature was already enabled. I also noticed Evolution Alarm Notifier is also active and that I have not been getting any alarm notices since I began using Evolution.

But you do hear sound files or else?
CLI:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

System preferences -> sound
test sound theme and verify other settings.
Verify the package is installed.

System administration -> login screen
login sound is enabled?

Maybe install gnome-alsamixer (GUI) to test settings regarding the prior 'Line In jack' issue.
Verify settings in system preferences
gstreamer-properties

I edited the canberra-gtk-play command used by "GNOME Login Sound" by adding the "-V 0" option as was suggested at http://ubuntuguide.net/how-to-turn-offdownup-login-sound-when-ubuntu-gnome-startup. This solved my problem. I then removed "-V 0", as this was how "GNOME Login Sound" was originally configured. The login sound continued to work. The initial volume level is apparently saved somewhere else as state data and somehow got lost. I'll pursue my "Line In" jack problem in another question as that continues to be a problem. Thanks for all the help.
