Clean up log files

Asked by drskartik

I am using Maverick meerkat 64 bit. I have allocated 6.9 GB to / partition and find that it is 94% full. On scrutiny I have a file var/log/./bootchart file which is 1.3 GB in size. How to empty this file so as to get some space.
regards
Kartik

Try this and tell me if it works:

Press Alt+F2 and type "gksudo nautilus" without the quotes, and press run.
(Type in your password)
Go to the folder that you mentioned.
Select the file that you want to delete and press Shift+Del which will delete them right away instead of using the trash. (Warning, that means it's permanent. We don't send it to the trash when running nautilus as root because the trash doesn't work properly for the root user).
Double check that you actually want to delete the files and then press delete.
Close the file browser.

That should hopefully do it.

Thanks,
I could delete the files. Could free about 28 % of my / folder.

You're welcome.
If you aren't using bootchart, you might remove it because apparently it puts a chart in that folder every startup.
You can remove it (if you want to) by going to Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center and searching for bootchart and clicking remove on the Boot Sequence Visualisation entry.
