USB modem becomes disconnected in Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Jessie

I have a dual-boot system w/ Ubuntu 10.04 and Win XP Pro, SP3 and a ZTE MF626 USB 3G modem. I'm not mobile so don't have cell-to-cell access probs and a strong signal.

I've been plagued recently w/ my connection being dropped when I'm in my Ubuntu desktop. I kept calling my provider and the connection would sometimes be re-established, sometimes not.

Due to other probs w/ my Ubu setup, I switched to my Win desktop, and VOILA! my modem works just fine.

For the record, in Ubu, I usually use the NM but when the connection fails I use a Sakis3G script I found in my quest for answers to modem issues. Sakis3G will usually connect and the good thing is that if it fails once, it tries a 2nd time .. but sometimes even IT fails to connect or gets dropped. Doesn't happen on my Win desktop ...

Any ideas? Is it a bug?

Log a bug if you suspect one. Remember the windows support for hardware is a lot better than Linuxes

Unfortunately, the problem is in my Ubuntu boot and not Windows.

As for it being a bug, I'm not sure it is. I've seen where ppl don't have connectivity at ALL but I haven't seen this particular prob posted anywhere else.

The problem isn't that I NEVER had connectivity w/ Lucid Lynx, the problem is I DID and now connection drops for no good reason.

I've gone to the ISP numerous times and though the problem SEEMED solved, it'd go back to dropping the connection and being unable to reconnect.

Can you boot with the device detatched, get logged in and let the OS settled. then run:

lsusb

then plug in the device, wait 10 seconds and run:

echo; lsusb; dmesg | tail

Copy the whole output and paste here as an update. If you have NO connectivity at all you can paste the text to a file, save it on an external storage device and paste here using windows.

My desktop wouldn't boot into Ubuntu OR windows.

#It said
"Diskette device not found:1"

#and then said:
no such partition

#then
grub rescue:

at which point I tried exit, stop, start, cmd, 1 and safe, on the off chance I'd get something back, but all gave unknown command and

grub rescue:

I screwed up, I know. How badly and will I need to format and reinstall Windows (if I can, it's a Dell :-/) or install Ubuntu?

I went into Windows and just deleted the partition. Will continue to learn more about Ubuntu and grub, etc. before I do a complete install of it. Ubuntu's netbook version works like a DREAM but this desktop is something else again. Wish there had been more help available...
