Ubuntu desktop GUI for dynamic web pages

Asked by Jim Miller

I am very new to Ubuntu. I am changing all my public works workstations and laptops to Ubuntu to save money. I have new users who will adapt quickly because they are not MS trained. I also want to build a "private" cloud on a server to organize the team's files. Question: I am a Microsoft VB.Net and a MS SQL programmer. If I move from Microsoft products, what are the best combinations of Database and web programming tools to compliment Ubuntu? There are so many choices. My requirements are "free" except for training and "my" development time. Initially I will host on an internal server in our own Domain. Any suggestions are appreciated. I am completely new to open source. :)

The issue is not so much what combination of database and web programming language complements Ubuntu as what complements you. Really only you can answer this. PHP and MySQL are certainly popular choices, being the MP of LAMP servers, but Python and Ruby have their proponents, as does PostgreSQL. Take a look at samples on the internet (Wikipedia is good for this) to decide which syntax and approach seems most comfortable.

Can you help with this problem?
