Any known problems with external USB hard drives running on 10.04?

Asked by Mannex

I am considering a purchase of an external USB hard drive for backup, but I am wondering if there are any known problems using these on 10.04. Any information will be helpful. Thanks!

In my household, on 10.04, there have been no problems at all with running external USB drives on several machines.

The only thing to watch out for when buying an external drive is that there are no proprietary programs installed by the manufacturer. The two hard drives I use are Maxtor (this had proprietary software installed which was easily removed) and Western Digital which was clean.

For your consideration: you can install an additional hard drive in your computer for backup.

Thanks. It's a laptop, so another drive IN the computer is not an option, as there is not enough room in there (I've looked!). If I had a desktop, I would probably have done that, though, and used a RAID configuration.
