booting problem

Asked by Steve

I have recently downloaded ubuntu 7.04 and copied it to a CD and would now like to try it out from the CD.

However when I switch my computer on Windows XP comes up automatically. I have loaded the ubuntu CD but nothing happens. How can I select Ubuntu? Can I use Ubuntu and then revert to Windows XP? Will Ubuntu damage any of My MS files or the XP OS.?

Hi, Steve!

First, you need to make sure that your CD-ROM is the first boot device, that your computer will try to boot from. In order to do this, you need to enter the BIOS setup screen. Look here for more information:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Second, you need to make sure that you've burned the ISO-image to CD the right way. Open the disk from your Windows system - you should see various folders with names like "bin", "casper", "disctree", etc. If all you see, is a single file, named like "ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso", then you should burn the disc again by following these instructions:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Hope this helps :)
