Shut Down doesn't work after update.

Asked by GordieGii

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Automatic updates updated from 2.6.32-23-generic to 2.6.32-24-generic.
The first thing I noticed was the sound didn't work.
I tried to Restart but all it did was go to the Login screen.
Tried Shut Down from there. No change.
Pressed the power button. No effect.
Held the power button till off.
Turned on the computer. Logged in. All the same stuff as above.
Tried again. Logged in as Guest. The sound works but Shut Down and power button still disabled.
Tried again but booted in to 2.6.32-23. Everything works normally.
Now it gets strange...
I booted into -24 again to try and repeat the results but everything works normally.
The next morning I booted into -24 and the sound, Shut Down and power button don't work again.
Held power button. Restarted into -24. Same stuff.
Held power button. Restarted into -23. Everything works fine.
Started up today into -23. Everything works fine so I'm pretty sure it's the update and not a failing motherboard.

Oh BTW it's a Zotac ION-ITX board. I have all the latest Nvidia drivers from http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu.

Has anyone else had this problem or a similar one?
Is there any info I have left out.

Gordie.

Seems like a problem with the drivers... A simple question: are you planning to use a LTS version of Ubuntu (Long time support, 3 years instead of 6 months), or are you updating twice a year?

If you update every 6 months, I would wait two more weeks by using kernel 23 and wait for the update to Maverick. The newer kernel of Maverick may solve all your problems.

Won't 11.04 be LTS?

On the other hand Maverick may propagate whatever is causing the problem and I may not be able to revert to kernel 23 without reinstalling Lucid.

I think I should stick with Lucid at least until kernel 25 comes out or I find a solution to the problem.

Thanks for reminding me that Maverick is coming out soon. It's definitely something to keep in mind.

Ah. I see kernel 25 is here. Wish me luck!

Kernal 25 does the same thing.

The really weird thing is that that the problem doesn't happen until the second time I start the new kernel. (24 or 25)
I think it must be changing a config file after everything is initialized but the new setting(s) keep it from initializing properly the next time. Then when I start with kernel 23 it works right away so either it tolerates or ignores the new setting. (but changes it back or removes it so 24/25 works again the first time)

OK I fixed the problem.

All I had to do was remove 'guest' from the 'nopasswdlogin' group and the symptom went away.
Don't ask me why.
