They're just compressed archives (not packages; that means something quite different in Ubuntu) like zip files. They can therefore contain anything and aren't installable by themselves. Extract the contents (right-click the file and choose Extract Here) then look for a README or INSTALL file that will tell you how to proceed.

1) Your first choice should be to install from Repository

2) Your second choice should be to install from a .deb

3) Your VERY LAST choice should be to install from a .tar

Look at:

"How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" - http://amitech.50webs.com/installing/index.php.html
"Installing Software in Ubuntu" - http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware
"Compiling things on Ubuntu the Easy Way" - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

Can you help with this problem?
