Warning: The battery cannot be identified.

Asked by Anthony A DeCaro

I recently converted from Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.4. Everything was fine with no problems until one day I booted the system and got the following error message:
Warning: The Battery cannot be identified.
This system will be unable to charge this battery.
Press <F2> 2 times to enter setup
Press <F12> and any key to enter boot system.

I press enter 2 times and it boots the system. But this is very cumbersome. Does anyone have the fix for this short of reloading Ubuntu.

Unplug the power cord from the laptop, plug it back in. Wait 30 seconds or so then hold the power button in to turn the system off. Then wait 5 seconds and turn it back on.

My Dell D420 does this but the battery is only 25% functional due to age, yours may be similar but this workaround may help.

It should be noted that this is a hardware warning message, absolutely nothing to do with Ubuntu; your laptop is producing this message before a bootloader has even been called, never mind Ubuntu booting :)

My own laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501) also does this; it's little more than an annoyance. I believe actionparsnip's advice may help you.

Well The unplug the cord advise did not fix the problem. But appreciate your help! It is an annoyance, but I would really like to fix this problem. I was thinking it may be the Bios. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 also, and checking the Dell site there was an issue with this message error. Is there a way to update the bios n Ubuntu, if I download it from Dell.

Any other idea's on how to fix this problem, how about the Bio's question.

The only BIOS update I see from Dell is from Dec 2007 (version "2.6.3 A16") and is supplied as a Windows EXE file, so no, it's unlikely to work.

(You could try running the .exe through Wine, but to be honest I wouldn't encourage it; BIOS updates are one of those things which can cause real problems if they don't work perfectly, and I wouldn't want to take the chance on whether it'd work properly under Wine or not.)

Can you help with this problem?
