Feisty Dell Vostro CD/DVD issue

Asked by TehBeyond

I recently purchased a laptop. After realizing how much Vista sucked, I reformatted and installed Ubuntu. However, now the laptop (in Ubuntu) is confused as to the existence of the optical drive. (It is a DVD/CD Burner) It appears in the file system through the browser, but no files/discs can be read/accessed. I know it is not the drive, because it worked with Windows and installing Ubuntu. Also, it spins up when I insert a disc. I am pretty new to linux and don't entirely understand how everything works, so please pardon me if this is a question with a simple answer.

Here is the error message I get when I double-click on the CD-ROM 1 icon in the file browser:

Unable to mount the selected volume:
mount: special device /dev/hda does not exist.

To put it simply, I am perplexed. Any help you can offer (or diagnostics you would like me to run) would be appreciated.

I have done as you have asked, however... It looks as though it scrolled past the top for the dmesg command. The grep command did literally nothing. (I even ran it as root) Here is the dmesg output....
