Dual boot 10.04 LTS & Win7: Sharing flies

Asked by Rafael

I have a laptop that I dual boot with 10.04 LTS & Win7. I love that Ubuntu can see the files and folders from the windows partition. I have a two part issue that I think are related.

#1) I used to have 2 icons on the Ubuntu desktop that was the Ubuntu (for lack of a better phrase) "My Computer" and the Windows My Computer. I applied a few updates and now both icons don't appear when I boot into Ubuntu. They show up on the Places Menu and when I click on that they show up on the desktop, but once I reboot they're gone. How do I make them stay on the desktop all the time.

#2) I want to put a shortcut on the Ubuntu desktop of a folder I use in Win7. The icon stays there but the shortcut doesn't work after reboot. Is there a way to have a perm shortcut on Ubuntu desktop that is pointing to a folder on the Win7 partition?

Thanks in advance,
-=Rafael

You can add the "My Computer", "Home", etc., icons back to the desktop in either of two ways:

1) Run gconf-editor (Press Alt+F2 to show the run dialog)
Open /apps/nautilus/desktop
Tick the appropriate boxes, e.g. computer_icon_visible

2) Use Ubuntu Tweak if you have it installed
Choose the options under Desktop Icon Settings

It seems that your Windows 7 partition isn't being mounted automatically, which is why it appears under places but not on the desktop. If it were auto-mounted, your shortcut would probably work correctly. You'll need to edit your fstab file. There are about a million guides on the internet for details on how to do that for an NTFS partition.

Can you help with this problem?
