ADAPTABILITY

Asked by GRACE ORIBHABOR

First question. Can Ubunto run concurrently with Win-7 on the same computer? 2) Does it adapt to software already loaded on the computer (common commercial household software)? 3) If I am running it concurrently, and am not engaging Win 7, will the google re-direct virus I have on this laptop affect Ubunto?

You can run Ubuntu in a virtual system to make it run concurrently. You can dual boot VERY easily (Use Win7's partition resizing ability to make unpartitioned space to install to). You will only be able to run the Windows software if it is 100% portable, otherwise it will need installing in Wine (maybe) and see if it runs, or find an open alternative. Windows viruses do not affect Ubuntu.

The OS is also called Ubuntu (Pronounced "OO-BOON-TOO")

1) in a word, no, it can not run concurrently. the only machine that can process concurrently is the human brain. BUT, both windoze and ubuntu can exists on the same computer, and you can have either one or the other running at one time. this is called a dual-boot.

2) no. software you have on windows will not automatically run on ubuntu. you can use an application called wine to run the windows software, but you have to re-install your windows software on ubuntu to do this. the drawback is that not all windoze software will run under wine. however, there are linux versions of those software available, or equivalent/comparable versions.

3) no. the virus you have on your windows system cannot infect ubuntu. these are completely different operating systems. most virii (viruses for the faint of heart) are written to disrupt windoze and will not run on ubuntu. however, if you have a virus that is attacking firefox, your web browser, as an add-on, you can get the same virus on ubuntu firefox. seeing that you cannot run windoze and ubuntu at the same time on the same computer, your google virus will have no effect on ubuntu.

oh. i don't consider time-splicing or multi-threading as concurrent processing. some people do.

WINE? So, after I reboot my puter, and it asked me which op to use, I pick Ubunto. It then loads up. I will need to get to a browser to get to the web. Does Ubunto come with a mozilla browser? or will mine be available?

Yes, Ubuntu comes with a browser: Mozilla Firefox. It should be the first orange-and-blue icon on the top panel, but it's also in the Applications menu, under Internet.

And a reminder: it's Ubuntu, not Ubunto.
