how to start kernel in initramfs?

after the recent security updates, my system can't log in and i get the initramfs screen.
how would i manually mount the kernel?

If you are getting a busybox prompt on kernel 2.6.32-24 then this thread might help http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1565714 If that is it, I would advise against rebuilding the initramfs for all kernels - just the one that is causing problems.
