sampling Linux for 1st time & have no sound/audio

CPU: Pentium 4
OS: Windows XP
Hardware: Notebook

Heading: sampling Linux for 1st time & have no sound/audio

Issue:

am sampling Linux for the first time. Ubuntu 10.04 won't go live. have successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10. no audio or video unfortunately. am having difficulty navigating to the hardware configuration. request info on troubleshooting. thank you.

You may also want to run:

sudo modprobe snd_intel8x0

If the alsamixer / modprobe works, we can make the changes permanent
