external hdd messed up

Asked by bepster

I selected my external hdd instead of my usb stick in the usb startup creator, so it started formatting. I immedately disconnected the hdd's usb connector, but filesystem was no longer recognised. Then I really messed up, by trying a lot of things without knowing what I was actually doing. I never really reformatted and never overwrote anything. Almost 300
Gb of 1Tb was used in, I believe, unpartitioned space. NTFS of FAT, I don't remember. What can I do?

Restore from backup is by far the easiest option. You could also use foremost to read the disk raw and recover what data it can. You will need a 1Tb partition mounted writable to put the recovered data on.

Can you help with this problem?
