Dell Dimension 2400 crashing

Asked by Rich.b

using Linux Ubuntu 10.04

I have replaced my HD in the Dell Dimension 2400 and also taken out

the 2 x 256Meg Ram strips and replaced it with 1 x 512Meg Ram strip from my 1GB computer which about 6 years old I do not know the make/brand of the broads fitted.

I am still getting crashes with white Bars on the top half of the screen.

Q 1/ I am assuming that the problem is the graphics part of the computer which build-in (I think), so can I fit the graphics card from my old 1 GB computer into the Dell and will this override the problem if I am right?

That's worth a try. The white bars can't be related to the RAM or harddrive in my opinion. The graphic card is probably the guilty part, so that's worth a try indeed.

I have NOT tried the Graphics card in the Dell so far because there in NO socket for AGP Graphics card only 3 PCI sockets (I think that's what they are called)

Sorry I mist the word NOT in my last posting.

I am assuming that the Graphics are build-in to the main PCB (board)

Did you check the RAM ? Usually graphical problems are not making the computer unstable, but quite simply impossible to display anything. That's worth checking the RAM from a Live CD.

If that's negative, which video card do you have ?

I replaced the 2 x 256Meg Ram strips which were fitted with 1 x 512Meg Ram strip.

as I said at the top of this posting.

The computer has crash 8 times today, this usually happens when I am on the Internet using Firefox, but rarely when play a video!

Yes, i saw that, but did you still check it ? Random crashes like that are often related to memory problems, so I think it's important to make sure it's not related to that.

As the problem was there before I replaced the RAM and after the RAM was totally replaced I did not think that it was likely that BOTH RAM would be faulty.

But as you think I should test them please advice how this is done....thank you

Mmmm yes, indeed, you are right, quiet unlikely. But always check first, who knows, you could be very unlucky. Better make sure now, at least this option will be tested.

One question, if you boot in recovery mode and type this:

"lspci"

what do you get ? I'm wondering if your problem is not coming from the infamous Intel drivers in Lucid. I had some very very serious problems with them on some Dell laptops, so i think we should identify the card if the memory is not guilty. Thx !

BTW, don't type everything here, look for lines with "Intel", as it's what I'm looking for.
