Can I re-install 9.03 over an existing copy of 10.04 LTS and keep the XP install?

Asked by Dave Cason

HI,

I just installed 10.04 on a ASUS 1005PE that has XP Pro installed on a seperate partition.
The GRUB loader found the existing XP install and its fine but I don't want to use the new
10.04 Ubuntu that I put on because of bugs ....

Can I just re-install 9.03 on the seperate partition that's on the PC's hard drive? One drive
- partitioned as 200 GB for XP and 50 GB for Ubuntu. Will I lose the GRUB loader or will it still
work? Can I just wipe out the existing 10.04 on that second partition ? Will it damage my XP
install?

Cheers'
Dave

Sure, I do recommend you boot to the Windows CD and reinstate the Windows boot loader, you can then delete the Ubuntu partitions (make sure backups are recent in case of catastrophe). If you have a separate /home partition you are even smugger as you can simply format your root partition and install to that. (This is not default in Ubuntu sadly).

Once you have a PC with only windows booting, you can install to the empty space with Jaunty and the dualboot will again be handled. Please note that Jaunty dies next month so you may want to simply install Karmic.

Hey Action ....

Thanks for the note .... It's a brand new install so blowing away that new 10.04 install is fine since
there is nothing to back up.

I guess my question is how do I use the XP CD to reinstate the Windows boot loader - this is my first
shot at a duel boot system and the 10.04 put the GRUB in all by itself (thank god - grin)

Can you point me to a how-to to reinstate the Windows Loader? And yep, I'll do Koala .....

Cheers'
Dave
